HISTORY & HERITAGE PUBLIC LECTURES: 20 January 2016

Boys will be Boys, or, A Tale of Manx Juvenile Delinquency

Dr Sue Nicol, University of Liverpool

Reformatory Ship Akbar

Sue’s lecture looks at the treatment of young Manx juvenile delinquents during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A number of them ended up on board the Akbar Reformatory Ship in the River Mersey (pictured left). Sue examines the changing legislation that allowed this to happen and asks why the Isle of Man Government decided, in the 1880s, to change the way in which young male juvenile delinquents were treated. We had a great turn out for Sue’s talk and are keen to get her back to talk about other aspects of her PhD research!
